They start out bi-pedal. When they mate, the male climbs onto the female's back and fuses with her. His legs become elongated and together they morph into a 4-legged hermaphroditic creature.
I can't remember where I read this (oh here http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Soulmate#Plato) but the Greeks got their idea of soul mates from a four-armed, four-legged creature that predated humans. So now whenever you find your soul mate you become "whole." I guess your creature is the reverse - neat.
